I had come up with a dress for any previous shoot in 2022 but sustainability popularity runs deep during my philosophy and so it was an ideal canvas for my next project.
Usually, only natural fibers (silk, cotton, linen, etc) could be dyed therefore the mixed fibers of the dress (silk dupion and polyester tulle) presented something of a challenge. In the end, I used a spray called Oasis that is designed for use by florists on flowers! But I tested it first on some bits of the same fabrics and also the effect was perfect. I arranged 6 colors of spray to produce the ombre look I wanted.
I place the dress on the stand in your garden, using the plastic sheeting to safeguard the dress, not the paving! I masked the lace trim with tape, took a really deep breath.. and began. I worked on the lace downwards layering in the colors in bands that faded together. First yellow and orange then three shades of red graduating to purple and violet in the hem.
When I removed the masking in the lace I decided to include a light spray of yellow to make sure a smooth transition towards the white above. Three coats, each with 2 hours to dry along with a total of seven hours of spraying took its toll on my small back and trigger finger however the labor of love was worthwhile. The dress was finished and ready for the photoshoot.
