pVets usually recommend that cats use litter boxes that are at least as long and wide as they are, so my goal has always been to choose the largest robot litter box that makes sense for our small NYC apartment. I have two boxes at home: one in the bedroom (which is only used occasionally) and another in the corner of our living room. Both cats use the latter nine times out of ten, so I replaced it with the Litter-Robot 4.
One of the main complaints people have about self-cleaning litter boxes (especially the Litter-Robot 3) is how much space they take up. As someone who lives in a small apartment, this is definitely one of my biggest concerns as well. Fortunately, the Litter-Robot 4 fits perfectly into the space we previously used for a traditional litter box. In our case, we also put a diaper pail next to the box (ridiculous, I know), and to control the smell, we dump the litter pieces there so we don't have to run to the garbage room as often. So while the Litter-Robot 4 isn't small, it allows us to integrate our cat corner, and since the Litter-Robot's odor-controlled waste collection drawer is built into the bottom of the machine (which is similar in purpose and design to a diaper pail), it looks more stylish sitting in the corner of our living room.
Both of my cats are Devon Rexes, which are known for their small size; they weigh about 6 pounds and 10 pounds, respectively. The gentle leader collar is big enough for them, and according to Whisker, there's no weight limit on using the box (although the cats must weigh at least 5 pounds to use it in automatic mode in order to trigger the weight sensor).
Undoubtedly, the Litter-Robot 4's design is sleeker, more minimalist and more attractive than Whisker's earlier models. The new look is also better suited to cats. The open design makes it easier for them to get in and out of the litter box, and ultimately gives them more room to go to the bathroom. As most cat owners know, the more space you can give your cat, the more comfortable they are and the less likely they are to have an accident.
There are also features specifically for older cats or those with mobility issues. While the Litter-Robot 4 includes an automatic night light and optional ramp attachment for easier access to the box, your cat's comfort and ease of movement are issues to consider.
